AUSTRALIAN DICTIONARY OF BIOGRAPHY

Rasp, Charles (1846–1907)

This article was published in Australian Dictionary of Biography, Volume 6, (MUP), 1976
Charles Rasp (1846-1907), prospector, was born on 7 October 1846 at Stuttgart, Duchy of Württemberg, where he was educated. A clerk in a chemical firm, he later trained as an edible-oil technologist with a large chemical manufacturing company in Hamburg, where he worked in the export department as he was fluent in English and French. Rasp was delicate and the bitter winter of 1868 brought on a serious lung weakness, so he decided to leave Germany for a warmer climate.
Rasp arrived in Melbourne in 1869 and found work pruning vines. After two years on agricultural properties he tried the Victorian goldfields but the days of the big strikes were over and the slushy diggings gave him a hacking cough. On advice from friends he moved to New South Wales. He worked on Walwa station, then wandered from place to place until engaged as a boundary rider on Mount Gipps station in the Barrier Ranges in the far west. After discoveries of silver at Silverton and Day Dream every station-hand in the area searched for indications of the metal.
When his duties led him to the 'hill', Rasp often examined the outcrop. No geologist, he was observant and on 5 September 1883 pegged the first block on the 'Broken Hill', which he thought was a mountain of tin. On advice of the Mount Gipps manager, George McCulloch, a 'syndicate of seven' was formed and seven blocks pegged to include the whole ridge. Each member subscribed £70 to the unregistered 'Broken Hill Mining Co.' and paid £1 a week towards working the claim.
The syndicate had little success for some months and the Adelaide analysts' reports were disappointing as they only tested for tin. The discovery of rich silver ore in 1885 led to the formation of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co., with capital of 16,000 £20 shares, 14,000 of which went to the syndicate, and to a rapid growth of the mining industry at Broken Hill. Within five years Rasp had made a fortune.
He was prominently connected with Broken Hill for some years. With a large number of shares in the company, he moved to Adelaide when dividends were declared; he married Agnes Maria Louise Klevesahl there on 22 July 1886. They bought a house, Willyama, where his wife entertained in the grand manner. Rasp preferred his library of French and German books. For some years he had mining interests in Western Australia.
Leaving an estate of £48,000, Rasp died suddenly from a heart attack at his residence on 22 May 1907 and was buried in North Road cemetery, Adelaide. He was childless. In 1914 his widow married Count von Zedtwitz and died in Adelaide in 1936. Oil paintings of Rasp and his wife are in the Charles Rasp Memorial Library, Broken Hill.

RETTICH, David - born Württemberg, married Emma Lenkersdorff FINGER 1884
David RETTICH, son of Joseph RETTICH & Agnes ROLLER, was born on the 6th April 1851 in Daugendorf, Riedlingen, Königreich Würrtemberg. Rettich emigrated out of Wuerrtemberg and Deutschland by way of the interim hub of safety and peace in England, and there embarked at the Port of London on the the vessel "BROTHERS" to arrive in Melbourne, Australia on the 6th May 1881. On disembarking David Rettich went out to the Germanic settler district of Doncaster, in the parish of Bulleen-Bulleen, where he spent the next 20 years, marrying a local-born, though motherless, and so adopted daughter of the well-known Finger family, Emma Johanne 'Lenkerstorff' FINGER (1861-1918) in 1884. She was the daughter of Christian Gottlieb FINGER (1823 – 1886) and his wife Johanné Caroliné HEIDRICH (1825 – 1864). Emma was raised by the childless LENKERSTORFFs in Doncaster. David & Emma Rettich were to produce four sons and three daughters. They were: 1. Albert Joseph RETTICH (1885 – 1949); 2. Emma Wilhelmine RETTICH (1886 – 1929); 3. Justine Eleonore RETTICH (1888 – 1923); 4. Julia Caroline RETTICH (1889 – 1957); 5. Oswald David Wilhelm RETTICH (1891 – 1970); 6. David Hermann RETTICH (1894 – 1961); and 7. Lawrence Alexander RETTICH (1896-?).
Though all the children seem to have been born while they were in Doncaster, in about 1900 the Rettich's moved to the Dandenong Ranges town of Emerald, nearby to where they had taken up Crown Allotment 106c, in the Parish of Narre Warren, County Mornington, located in the Aura Vale - Paradise area of Narre Warren North, Victoria, Australia. The date of the 19th November 1909 was the Final settlement date on Ten year Gov't lease-buy to D. & A. Rettich for Lot 106C - of about 136 acres, taken up with his eldest son, Albert Joseph RETTICH. The Rettich family senior were seven years in the Dandenongs, the first four in Emerald, and then for three years Rettich family lived on the farm at Paradise. It seems likely that a son, or sons and daughters, stayed on the land at Paradise (now Clematis) after 1909.
In about 1908 the Rettich's senior moved into Boroondara parish, Melbourne, for they had been living in Camberwell and then at Hawthorn for six years by the time of the outbreak of War in Europe. After 33 years in Australia, at the age of 62, David Rettich was working as a Gardener and living at No.18 Launder Street, Hawthorn, Victoria, when he swore the oath to be Naturalised in his Aliens memorial of the 6th March 1914. David Rettich died on 8 August 1933 in Hawthorn East, Boroondara. His wife predeceased him, having died in 1918 in Hawthorn.

AUSTRALIAN DICTIONARY OF BIOGRAPHY

Reye, Ralph Douglas Kenneth (1912–1977)

This article was published in Australian Dictionary of Biography, Volume 16, (MUP), 2002
Ralph Douglas Kenneth Reye (1912-1977), pathologist, was born on 5 April 1912 at Townsville, Queensland, youngest of nine children of Carl Albert Hermann Reye, a fruit merchant from Württemberg, and his wife Mabel Mary, née Youngson, who was born in New South Wales. The frequent mispronunciation of Douglas's surname drew his response, 'it rhymes with ''eye"'. After attending Townsville Grammar School, he entered St Paul's College, University of Sydney (M.B., B.S., 1937; M.D., 1945), where he 'passed an unruffled and aloof six years'. He rowed in St Paul's challenge VIII, played an occasional game of tennis and owned a new motorcar. Tall, slim and sensitive, he was described as a 'bronzed Apollo of the Barrier Reef', as 'Teutonic' looking, and as 'the aesthete, the epicure, the connoisseur'.
In 1939 Reye joined the pathology department of the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children; he remained at that institution for the rest of his working life. During World War II he tried to obtain a commission in the Australian Army Medical Corps. Because of a shortage of pathologists in civilian practice, his application proved unsuccessful, but he was appointed honorary captain, Reserve of Officers, in March 1941. When Frank Tidswell, the hospital's director of pathology, died that year, Reye was made acting-director; he was to be confirmed in the post in 1946.
On 3 January 1942 in the chapel of his old college he married with Anglican rites Corrie Saunders (d.1990), a fellow medical practitioner who became director of the Spastic Centre, Mosman, and a notable figure in the treatment and rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy. Reye wrote a thesis entitled, 'Histiocytic granulomatosis of infants: a comparison of certain ill-defined reticulo-endothelial hyperplasias, based on the study of four cases', for his M.D. He also lectured (part time) in pathology at the university.
Reye's publications were comparatively few, but he contributed more than thirty papers to local and international journals, among them the Archives of Pathology, the Journal of Pathology and Bacteriology, and the Lancet. Although he preferred scientific terminology to popular names and eponyms, his own name was given to two medical conditions: the malignant tumours of childhood which he described in 1956 and 1965 were called Reyeoma I and Reyeoma II. With Graeme Morgan and Jim Baral, he published a paper in the Lancet (1963) on what was later known as the Reye syndrome (encephalopathy with fatty degeneration of the viscera). In 1966 he, Margaret Menser (later Burgess) and David Dorman described renal artery stenosis in the rubella syndrome—the first time that it had been recognized.
Under Reye's direction, the hospital's pathology department expanded steadily. A microbiologist, biochemist, virologist, histopathologist, bacteriologist and two haematologists joined the staff, and a cytogenetics laboratory was established. The director's meticulous attention to detail ensured that requests for equipment were usually approved by the hospital administration without question. Initially responsible for all laboratory work, Reye later confined himself to histopathology. In 1965 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
Colleagues found Reye shy and retiring, but ready to give advice to those who sought his help. That he kept the door to his office closed created a barrier for many of the hospital's junior staff. A number of registrars and residents lost the benefit of his expertise in paediatrics, 'not knowing how keen he was to share his experiences with them'. To those who knew him well, he was 'a delightful friend with his own brand of whimsical humour'.
Reye enjoyed reading, art, 'classic' motorcars, and his garden of subtropical trees and plants which overlooked the Lane Cove River at Linley Point. Less than twenty-four hours after he retired from the R.A.H.C. he died of a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm on 16 July 1977 at Royal North Shore Hospital and was cremated. His wife and their daughter survived him.

AUSTRALIAN DICTIONARY OF BIOGRAPHY

Roth, Adam (1827–1898)

This article was published in Australian Dictionary of Biography, Volume 11, (MUP), 1988
Adam Roth (1827-1898), winemaker and farmer, was born on 11 February 1827 at Wilhelmsfeld, Baden, Germany, son of Adam Roth, farmer and townsman, and his wife Margrete, née Reibold. At Heiligkreuzsteinach he married Katherina Kling (d.1906) on 27 July 1856. Migrating as free settlers they reached Sydney on 3 May 1857.
After working in Sydney as a cooper, Roth purchased forty acres (16 ha) at Eurunderee, near Mudgee, the next year. In 1862 he bought another parcel of land and planted an orchard and vineyard. Short in stature and strong in will, Roth was naturalized in 1865. Near neighbours were Peter and Louisa Lawson; in 1876 Roth signed a petition organized by Peter Lawson for a school at 'Eurundery'.
Prospering after the local gold rush of the early 1870s, he sold fruit, vegetables and wine to the miners at Pipe Clay Creek and Home Rule, and purchased blocks of choice land on the Cudgegong River and Pipe Clay Creek. The home property, Rothview, included a winery and cellar. The Mudgee district enjoyed a slower and cooler growing season than the Hunter valley, producing red wines of deep hue and sweet golden white wines. Roth planted Muscat Hamburg, Shiraz and Frontignac wine-grapes for the reds and Muscat of Alexandria, white sherry and Verdelho for the whites. The wines were fortified by the addition of grape spirit as a preservative. Sweetwater and Muscat Hamburg grapes were grown for eating, selling in Sydney at eightpence a pound. Ohanez grapes, packed in cork shavings, were shipped to London and sold for 2s. 6d. a pound.
Roth was a member of the Mudgee District Wine-Growers Association and protested against the 1882 Licensing Act. In the 1890s wine-growing declined in the area. Survived by his wife, six sons and a daughter, Roth died at Eurunderee on 17 July 1898 and was buried in the Church of England cemetery, Mudgee.
In a detailed will Roth provided for all his children, who each had to provide an annuity for their mother, who remained at Rothview. Those receiving land were required to hold it in trust for their children. Thus the diminutive wine-maker tried to bind generations of his descendants to the countryside of Mudgee. His youngest son William (d.1939) inherited Rothview and was required to give his mother, in addition to £50 a year, 'the full use, benefit and enjoyment of one acre [.4 ha] of the vineyard … such one acre [.4 ha] to be selected by her'. Rothview was the only early Mudgee winery to survive until World War II. William's son Alan (Jack) Roth took over the winery in 1935, changed its name to Craigmoor in 1940 and produced prize-winning wines until his death in 1969.
